As we discussed previously in this series, first impressions really do leave a lasting impact. Your company’s employee onboarding process is the ideal opportunity for you to set the ideal first impression on new employees. The process should be focused on making new employees feel comfortable and valued.
A new report by SHRM has revealed that more than 5 percent of all employees leave their jobs today due to a poor onboarding experience. This percentage is ever increasing, and you might end up losing your employees due to the wrong first impression soon. Knowing the benefits of onboarding, you can read this article to find the tips and techniques for creating and organizing it.
Prepare Colleagues for New Employees
Before you begin with the preparations for a new employee, you should ideally prepare colleagues for their arrival. Either alert employees in-person or send them a notification through email. The announcement should tell them about the role this new employee will play and how the current members can help in collaborating and communicating with them.
Have Their Workstation Ready
You don’t want to be clearing and setting a new employee’s work station as they stand behind you and wait. The ideal process is to have the new employee’s workplace ready before they arrive. Have convenient nametags and welcome notes attached around the work station to help them feel comfortable and at ease.
Make Sure They Have Access to Necessary Programs
Your new employee should have access to all the necessary programs and platforms. You should give them their IDs for accessing different platforms as soon as they arrive. Also try to run them through how these programs work and what they can do to understand them.
Plan a Team Lunch
Planning team lunches for new employees sounds like a decent idea. This is, however, feasible only if you don’t hire frequently. It wouldn’t sit well with you to organize team lunches every time a new employee comes, if you are hiring on a weekly basis.
Knowing all about onboarding new employees successfully, we will now proceed to our final article in this series. The final article mentions tips on training and preparing employees for their work.
