Politics is complicated. While (almost) everyone agrees on living wages for employees, universal healthcare, and economic growth, there are several disagreements too. When highlighted in the workplace, these disagreements and differences in opinions can negatively impact employee communication and collaboration. Political identities and ideologies are often deeply rooted and make people very emotional about their beliefs.

Therefore, it is for the betterment of everyone to prevent politics at work. The responsibility to prevent politics at work lies on the administration, HR department, and the employers themselves. If you belong to any of these groups, here are some effective measures you can take:

Set and Implement a Fair Policy

Setting a workplace policy regarding discussing and expressing politics and political ideologies is the most effective way to prevent politics at work. While it doesn’t have to police employees’ self-expression, writing guidelines on what does and doesn’t come under political expression can help.

For example, employees must be able to dye their hair as they please. However, color combinations of flags from political parties can be banned. Similarly, badges, pins, stickers, and mini flags of politics must not be allowed. While you must not stop employees from attending rallies and events, ban discussing all political events and employees’ experiences.

Remind Employees of the First Amendment

The First Amendment only protects people against government retribution for speaking their minds. It does not mention private settings. This means that free speech is only permitted under government and public spaces. However, some states protect employees’ right to express political opinions and protect them from discrimination for the same by their employers. But in states that don’t, employees can find themselves in unpleasant scenarios.

While no organization should threaten its employees for expressing their political opinions, the case for banning politics at work must be made politely and logically. Political discussions can cause a rift between colleagues and drive customers away, negatively impacting organizational growth. An organization can only prevent that by detaching itself from politically charged employees. Thus, making the consequences of political discussions rational and justified.

Monitor Discussions at Work

Eavesdropping on employees isn’t a favorable quality. However, monitoring general discussions at work can greatly prevent employees from discussing politics at work. Some guidelines about appropriate topics can also help since politics are closely intertwined and effective in people’s everyday life.

For example, ban jokes on political issues and figures and all political discussions, even between those sharing beliefs. You must also train managers and leaders to investigate discrimination complaints thoroughly and step into potentially aggressive conversations sooner than later.

Finally, leading by example is the most effective way to prevent political discussions. Employers, HR personnel, administration, and organizational leaders can play a crucial role in making the workplace inclusive and comfortable for employees with varied political beliefs. Holding all employees accountable equally helps create and maintain an environment of mutual respect, discipline, and open communication.
