Every employee has a bad day or a week where they cannot connect with anyone else at work and feel sad or depressed. However, things can get serious when your most dependable employees suffering from mental stress, anxiety, and depression and are unable things the way they were able to previously.

You can tell that your employees are having more than just a bad day when they withdraw from social interactions and stop socializing altogether. Employees can struggle from clinical depression, a condition that significantly impacts an employee’s ability to think, feel and act. The impacts of depression can significantly reduce performance, which is why managers have to be careful in how they tackle it.

In this article, we look at some of the ways managers and organizations can follow to manage depressed employees in the organization. Go by these tips to ensure that your employees stay safe and happy.

Give them Assurances

It can be very easy for employees to consider symptoms of poor mental health and depression as just disinterest in being within the office and general slacking off. If a pleasant and enthusiastic worker starts slacking off, it is usually a sign that they aren’t able to focus like they did on work and aren’t within their desired headspace.

Managers should look to intervene sensitively and make sure that they provide reassurances where they’re due. The one thing employees need right now is for managers to come and remind them that it is alright to feel the way they do. The reassurances should include constant support during their condition and the promise of standing with them through it.

Listen to Them

Many times employees just want someone sympathetic from work to sit down and listen to them. Be that sympathetic support and make sure that you sit down and listen to the grievances that your employees have.

While supervisors and managers aren’t mental health professionals who can guide people, they sure can listen and give employees an ear when needed.

Be Accommodating

Finally, organizations should look to be accommodating towards employees with depression. The accommodating nature will help employees feel better and will allow them to remain connected at work. Listen to whatever problems and reservations they may have, and make sure that their concerns are heard. Provide a non-toxic environment at work so that their problems aren’t aggravated further and are actually limited.
