Gaining a thorough understanding into what motivates this new generation of youngsters can help you attract talent that is over 20 million strong! Born between the years 1990 and 1999, their challenges and life goals are an entirely different beast than those of older generations. The power of the internet has equipped them with a great many number of skills which can help to help your business grow.
Your office will soon house multiple generations, each with their own unique patterns of goals, worries and ambitions. When it comes to generational gaps between workers, using a one size fits all policy can spell disaster for your company. While our previous blog extensively covered the millennials, or Gen Y, the current post will delve into the minds of Gen Z.
Listed below are a few of their attributes
1) They are not driven by money
Money serves merely as fuel to them. Instead what they’re looking for is an exhilarating and challenging experience. The internet has served to instill an entrepreneurial spirit into them. They want more control and feel more responsible over your business. This makes them extremely opportunistic and confident in their abilities. Grooming their entrepreneurial mindset can help your company achieve large turnovers annually.
2) They seek opportunity
Gen Z is motivated mostly by a well defined career pathway. They want to find the fastest, most efficient means of climbing up the hierarchy. This desire to succeed motivates them to learn all the ins and outs of their job as fast as possible to seek growth.
3) They are extremely reliant on technology
While the Millennials are known to be heavily addicted to technology, Gen Z find the use of gadgets even more intoxicating. That is, they generally communicate using social media such as Facebook and Twitter. But what is even more surprising about them is their preference on face to face meetings. Gen Z has been observed to place more importance on one on one human interactions than Gen Y. So it doesn’t hurt to have a chit chat with them every once in a while.
This is also a striking contrast to baby boomers , who prefer to lock themselves inside the cubicle forever while minimize human interaction.
4) They want to be treated as grown ups
Because they have grown around technology and gadgets, they have been on the receiving end of too much pampering and pandering, they are no longer receptive to such treatment and prefer to be taken a lot more seriously. Part and parcel of dishing out this treatment is to trust them with more of the company information and not hiding the agenda of the day.
It is advisable to make them part of executive meetings and ask them for their ideas and suggestions.
5) They are extremely energetic
Gen Z is packing energy. So much so that they can’t remain still for long periods of time. Their mind is racing in a hundred different directions at once as they constantly analyze their environment while simultaneously striking up a conversation with you. This kind of energy cannot be contained in just a single cubicle. So move them around the office more often to keep it contained within the domains of your company, otherwise they’ll hop around elsewhere, i.e find employment elsewhere.
