The world is reeling from the impact of COVID-19 as businesses and employers make peace with remote working opportunities to offer employees a relief from the pandemic. While most of our blogs are geared for employers and managers, we realize just how unprecedented and unique this situation is. Employers and employees find themselves in unchartered waters, which is why it is necessary for guidance to be handed out to both of them.
In this article we look at tips and guidelines for managing work from home, regardless of whether you are an employer or an employee. You have no morning/evening commute, you don’t have to go check up on your friends at work, and you most certainly don’t have to go to that downtown restaurant for lunch. Now, this can either be a blessing or a hindrance, depending on how you go about your work from home schedule.
No Screen Time in the Morning
We spend a significant part of our lives surrounded by smartphones, laptops and tablets. If you work by a screen, then it is necessary to begin your day without any screen time. Wake up, take a bath, have some breakfast, check up on the family and get to work on your laptop. Any screen time before that would just damage your attention levels.
Get Started Early
Work from home is no excuse for you to throw your routine out the window. You shouldn’t be sleeping at 3 or 4 in the night, only to wake up at 12 pm the next day. In such situations it is necessary that you get started early and follow the same sleeping pattern you had been following. Wake up at 6-7 am and get to work before 8.
Keep a Detailed Planner
Working from home might sound comfortable, but there are plenty of distractions and obstructions on the way as well. For instance, you can start gaming on your PS4 or start playing with your dog or children. With these distractions you can easily lose grasp on what you were doing or were supposed to be doing. Keeping this in mind, it is necessary that you keep a detailed planner with yourself and follow it to a T.
Keep Talking
Locking yourself inside your room is not the right way to approach work from home. If you want to remain productive, it is necessary that you maintain verbal conversations during your work hours. Follow your routine, but also make sure that you have someone to converse with. It could be a pet, your wife, or your children, but it is good to have someone to speak to before you get back to work.
