How to Set the Best Mobile Policy for Your Workplace

Workplace ethics have changed, and the development in technology has meant that employees are now more comfortable in bringing their cell phones to work. It is a fact that most of your employees bring their own mobile phone to the office. Knowing that they have a distracting device positioned right in their pockets, it is best for you to set some ground rules in the form of a mobile policy.

On one hand, you do not want employees to waste almost all of their time conversing on the phone. On the other, you don’t want your mobile phone policy to be restrictive and damaging. You want your employees to feel comfortable, but also know how excessively using the mobile phone isn’t accepted in your workplace.

Communicate Expectations

The first part of setting a mobile phone policy is to make your expectations clear through proper communication. You do not want your employees to be unaware of the policies you have in place for mobile phone usage. Clearly communicating these expectations can go a long way in actually achieving the kind of results you want.

You can include the policies in the employee handbook, but should also make a note to alert your employees of any changes made in the handbook. Do not expect your employees to follow the policies if they aren’t made aware of what they entail.

Ask Employees to Put Mobile Phone on Silent

The last thing you want in your organization is to have a mobile ringing on full blast when the concerned employee is outside making coffee or just hanging around. This doesn’t just impact the employee in question, but also impacts other employees. The ringing phone will disturb all of them and will hinder their work.

Thus, to limit such instances it is best to make it clear to employees that their phones should be on silent. Employees should also be frowned upon if they keep their phone on loud.

No Cell Phones in Meetings

Meetings play an important role in your workplace, and you want them to be as perfect as possible. To make sure there is nothing disturbing you during a meeting, you should keep a strict ban on cell phones during meetings. Ask members to keep their phones on their desks before they head into a meeting or conference room. Once all hindrances and disturbances are limited, you will be able to see the difference it makes.
