This article is the 15th and last in our series of 15 articles to help you in hiring for your organization. In our previous article we discussed the techniques and aspects of creating a decent onboarding process. In this article we take the process of hiring to its end with a final guide on tips you should follow for training new employees.
Starting a new job is an intimidating experience for almost everyone. So, needless to say, when you have a new addition to your team, you shouldn’t leave them to themselves, but should instead give them the proper training they are looking for. Even if your company provides formal training on the job, as a manager you should follow these tips for properly training and welcoming new employees.
Play Tour Guide
It is standard for all new employees to be given a tour on the first day. Instead of handing this task over to someone else, you should take it upon yourself to run your employees through the entire workplace. Work as a tour guide and make sure that they meet and greet with important people they will be collaborating with during their role. Also, do help them identify where to find coffee. Most new employees don’t know where they can find a good hot cup of coffee.
Use Mentors
We cannot emphasize enough how important it is for you to use a mentorship program for training new employees. If your team is working under one roof, you can assign one senior member to be the mentor for each new hire. Every new hire should be handed over to a different senior member. Keep following this system, so that all important details are passed over and no confusion remains.
Encourage Questions
We have all been through the dreadful ‘first day at the job’ experience at our new jobs. Knowing just how it feels, you should encourage new employees to ask questions during training. More than the encouragement itself, your response to these questions determines how welcoming you are to questions. So, make sure that you answer in detail and don’t let questions slip away.
Promote a Healthy Work/Life Balance
Implement this tip for all new and old hires alike. A healthy work/life balance keeps your employees sane and on track. Use your training sessions to assure employees of how you let them manage their work/life relationship.
