Due to growth of the global economy, workers from all over the world look towards the US for jobs and move here with their families to live the dream. The United States is now one of the most multi-cultural countries in the world, and its promise of freedom and liberty seem fulfilled when you look at the diversity of people that live here.

Most immigrants or expats come from very different cultures which presents certain problems related to workplace adjustment. For instance, someone coming from China might require a whole different level of micromanagement, than let’s say someone from the Indian Subcontinent.

This diversity poses a complex situation for managers and organizations, whereby the one-for-all approach no longer works. Not only do they have to think of ways to manage this diversity, but they also need to ensure that every employee is satisfied and happy with the attention they get.

Cultural differences can often form a major barrier to communication if your workplace culture promotes these differences. However, you can put these issues to rest if your organization is taking them seriously.

Some of the tips that can help you manage cultural diversity in the workplace include:

Promote Teamwork

There is nothing better than teamwork within a group of people from different backgrounds. When making teams, you have to make sure that the teams are well-balanced and that there is representation from almost everyone. The worst thing you can have as an organization is people of the same backgrounds forming groups or cliques, and secluding themselves from other groups.

You need to create an environment where workers are encouraged to stick by their team. To do so, you have to be the model of change and show your team members the right behavior. Abstain from bias, and make sure that you as a manager react the same way to issues facing all employees.

Awareness

A decent way to build a healthy workplace with cultural diversity is to make employees aware of different cultures and their celebrations. Celebrate the Chinese New Year, Hanukkah, Eid, Diwali and other cultural festivities to build that connection between everyone. Make the workers hang out with each other and appreciate each other’s culture.

Communication

Communication is extremely important when you are working in multi-cultural work settings. Not every person in your organization would communicate in the same manner as you. Some might have accents, or quirks and others might have confidence issues. You have to stay above all these barriers and make sure that the stage is set for everyone to feel good at work.
