This article is the first of a series of 15 articles to help you with hiring for your organization. The first step in the hiring process is to identify and recognize the need for new employees. Most employers fail to recognize the need for new employees and eventually end up losing out on possible growth opportunities.
Whatever the industry you operate in, there are certain signs that tell you it’s time to hire more employees for your business. Since these signs aren’t always as obvious as you want them to be, we help you discover the right way to identify them.
Employee Morale Is Low and Stress High
In an ideal world, you would want employee morale to be high and stress levels to be low but overtime, employee morale can drop and stress can rise. This usually happens when organizations don’t realize the need for new employees and keep overburdening current employees with excessive work.
Before you hire new employees to address this problem, it is necessary that you sit down with your employees and identify what the problem is. Throwing more people into your organization won’t necessarily solve this problem if you have other critical issues with your business.
You Have to Turn Down Business Opportunities
The moment you feel like turning down new business opportunities should be a glaring opportunity for you to increase scale and get new employees. Turning down projects is not good for your business. Imagine the amount you spent on marketing to eventually rope in new clients, only to turn them down because you don’t have enough employees.
Do, however, consider seasonal demand fluctuations before you scoop in full-time permanent employees. If the demand for your product or service is seasonal, you should look to hire temporary workers for periods of high demand. These workers can then be released when demand isn’t the same again.
Overtime Becomes the Norm
No functional organization should allow overtime to become the norm. Overtime can drain your employees and build a negative perspective in your culture. The best way forward is to realize when employees are stressed with overtime and hire proper reinforcement to stop the trend.
Your Current Employees Are Begging for Help
Employees happen to be vocal about the burden of work, especially if it isn’t manageable for them anymore. If your current employees are begging you to hire new employees, then you should probably listen to them and get the reinforcement they need.
Having recognized the need for new employees, you can now head on to the second part in the series ‘budgeting for hiring’. No hiring process is complete without the right budget, and we will guide you through that process in the next article within this series.
