4 Ways HR Has Changed Over Time

The world of work and organizations has drastically changed over the last decade, influenced by factors that include a brutal recession, a new generation of workers and major technological advances around us. Fact is, that deciding to change is no longer a choice for most companies, it is an obligation they have to entertain so that they remain updated with the changing trends of the world.

While organizations have restructured their models, HR departments have been at the forefront of this change. The way Human Resource departments look at recruitment, management, socialization and connectivity has drastically changed over the last decade.

In this article we look at some of the ways human resource has changed over time in regards to technological advances and changing social trends.

1.   No Social Policy Has Changed

Not too long ago, social media was considered a distraction that didn’t only threaten productivity, but could also lead to loss of efficiency in the workplace. However, HR departments have gone from a no-social policy to allowing the use of certain social networks in the workplace. HR departments now realize that hosting a strict perspective on this matter can lead to a lack of satisfaction and motivation in itself.

Trends are currently changing in this regard, as only 29 percent businesses have currently blocked access to social media, a staggering decrease from the 76 percent that initially had access blocked.

2.   A la Carte Benefits

Benefits offered by the HR department were initially limited to health and retirement programs. There wasn’t much room for choice and organizations stuck with the same old benefits. However, time has now changed and organizations are ready to incorporate a wide range of benefits to the mix.

Many organizations have come up with student loan repayment plans, hourly training plans and wellness plans that were unheard of back in the day. Employees still do value the basic benefits, but they are up for innovation in this regard.

3.   Feedback Around the Year

HR departments would previously deliver feedback in appraisal meetings or employee performance meetings. Feedback has now become fluid, with HR departments delivering feedback all around the year. Workers get real time feedback so that they can improve. HR departments at times use technology in this process to make the feedback even more worthwhile.

4.   Remote Work

Advancements in technology have meant that organizations and employees can now take work beyond the workplace. Organizations and HR departments are now relaxed when it comes to remote work and are open to the idea, considering the many pros on offer.
