Office politics are a norm in most organizations today. However, things tend to get ugly when these politics pick pace and conflicts become public. It is common for employees working on a team and inside one organization to host negative feelings toward one another. But these feelings can turn disruptive for the workplace if not enough is done to contain or curtail them.
As HR experts, we recommend every organization identify signs of politics in their infancy and kill them in the bud. Failure to do so can lead to a number of perils in the workplace, including the ones we have mentioned in our article:
Divisiveness in Teams
This is perhaps the most common problem originating out of politics in the workplace. Politics between different workplace factions can lead to feuds and conflicts across teams and can create a culture of divisiveness.
Regardless of the industry and niche they operate in, managers and HR professionals would want their teams to be at the top of their game at all times. Ideally, people are capable of keeping their emotions and individual differences separate from their work, but not everyone can do this. Eventually what transpires is a debilitating culture with all original values going down the drain.
Distraction
While divisiveness is a major peril on its own, it leads to a number of distractions in the workplace. We just can’t talk enough about how important it is for organizations to maintain decorum in the workplace. Regardless of whether people agree or disagree with each other, there isn’t much work bound to be done when employees disagree with each other and have factions in the workplace.
If the perils of politics are left untouched, the distractions will soon roll over across the organization and even distract employees that have nothing to do with the situation.
Feuds
Feuds and conflicts are often the end result of office politics. When ongoing political discussions, conflicts and differences become vocal, two different groups from a single workplace can enter into a disruptive feud. Such disruptive feuds can split the workplace into opposing groups and let the situation slip out of hand. These conflicts compromise productivity and take the focus away from the ultimate goal of profitability.
Disciplinary Action
Feuds often lead to disciplinary action and organizations have to eventually let go of star performers and talented individuals. Organizations have plans for every employee, and these plans can suffer as a result of politics in the workplace.
