If used correctly, employee feedback is an extremely powerful tool that can help generate a number of benefits. True feedback, delivered in a courteous manner, has the potential to help employees grow and can eventually signal a wave of change within the organization.
However, as unfortunate as it may be, feedback is often omitted entirely or ignored by certain managers in the workplace. Humans require recognition and effective feedback from time to time if you want them to improve or deliver the same consistent performance they are currently giving.
In this article, we look at some of the ways to deliver proper feedback to employees and help them grow over time. Help employees achieve what they aspire to in your workplace and fulfill their ambitions.
Be Very Specific
The last thing you would want to do while delivering feedback is to be vague and not give specific instructions and directions to your employees. Employee feedback should be to the point and should be crystal clear in nature. General comments like ‘I am not impressed with your work’ or ‘We need improvements’ may not suffice any longer.
If you want your corrective feedback to be used positively by the employee, you should make it direct and ensure that it benefits them in the long run.
Be Empathetic
Be empathetic while delivering your feedback and make sure that you understand what your employees might feel. If you are someone who gets frustrated easily, be prepared to give them space. Employees may not always react favorably in the face of corrective feedback. Remember to show them empathy where possible.
Don’t Wait for Appraisal Periods to End
So many organizations today have broken their yearly reviews down to semi-annual or quarterly meetings. Don’t wait for these meetings to come and the periods to get done with. If you feel there is something that an individual should know about their work or their behavior, the feedback should be delivered straight away. Waiting for periodic meetings to avoid can amplify damage.
Keep it Private
The golden rule of delivering feedback, especially the corrective kind, is to keep it private. Most employees wouldn’t like their shortcomings to be highlighted in front of everyone. You should, hence, make sure that these meetings are kept private and the feedback is delivered in all confidentiality. Delivering feedback can be uncomfortable for you as well. You wouldn’t want to make it even more complicated by moving it to an area where other employees are present.
