All jobs have some stressful situations and some issues that can create a difference of opinion. However, if this continues for more extended periods of time, so much so that the employees start showing symptoms of depression and illness, intervention is necessary.

Since it takes time to find a new job, we don’t recommend walking away from your current job. Look to develop ways to handle the dysfunction in the current position until you find a job in a better working environment.

1. Look to Find Common Ground

The most important manner of tackling the dysfunction in your job is by developing friendships with people who think the same way as you do. Before creating friendships and understanding with like-minded people observe and identify the people you consider are the sources of the negativity.

These are the fellow employees that you need minimal interaction with. By developing friendships with other employees, you will have a group that will have each other’s back and will keep you updated with the goings on in the office.

2. Relieve Stress

Stress is something that is part of work life. However, successful individuals ensure that they balance their professional and private lives by managing their stress after work.

Going to the gym, doing home repairs, or learning entirely new skills are some of the best ways to relieve stress. You need to ensure that you are living a fulfilling life outside your home and you should be looking forward to an activity each day after work.

3. Document your Activities

A thing that every smart person does in a toxic environment is to document their activities. By documenting your actions, you are creating a safe passage out for yourself in case a controversy emerges.

Save all the emails you receive in a folder and don’t forget to write down comments and decisions from meetings. Even list down or record the conversation you have on a phone call. In a toxic environment, controversy or a feud is waiting to happen, the evidence you collect will save you and keep you going every day.

4. Begin your Exit Strategy

Observing a toxic environment unfold daily is enough of an incentive to look for alternative jobs. Start applying for other positions and play the waiting game. If things take a drastic turn for the better, you have a reason to stay back, but if the situation does not improve, switch jobs and rid yourself of the environment once and for all.

If for some reason because of the toxic environment you have no other option other than leaving, then look for a bridge job. A bridge job will keep the finances rolling while you seek a job suiting your employment sector and specialization.

In the professional world, you might face excessive leg-pulling at some point in your career. The inability of the management to share goals and vision creates a toxic environment where everyone looks to outdo the other to get a piece of the cake. Knowing how to handle such an environment will go a long way in cementing your career.
