In a corporate environment, employers can often neglect employees’ emotional needs. While this isn’t a mistake by employers, corporate culture can curtain people’s personal lives and increase the communication gap. As a result, continued neglect of an employee’s needs can end in the employee showing signs of stress.
As an employer, you cannot successfully manage your employees when stressed. Instead of waiting for the employee to reach out to you, you can look for signs of stressed-out employees and reach out to them. Here are some common signs of stressed-out employees you can pick up:
Visible Exhaustion
You can pick this sign up from the attire and the personal hygiene of your employees. Even if your employees don’t stink, they may begin showing up to work with outgrown beards, unkempt hair, and poorly put-together outfits.
Other signs may also include bags under their eyes and a sleepy face. If any of your employees look visibly tired, chances are they might be dealing with more than they can. Reach out to them to help them manage work and life.
Decreased Work Efficiency
Decreased work efficiency is a tell-tale sign of stressed-out employees. A stressed-out person is usually unable to focus on things clearly, which slows down their efficiency. They may experience memory lapses or a decreased cognitive ability too.
While everyone has good and bad work days, if any of your employees’ efficiency suddenly decreases and then doesn’t increase in a week or so, you should consider it a sign of them being stressed out.
Such an employee would either begin working late hours or take days off. Those who work long hours can even skip lunch breaks to complete their work. Such employees aren’t only in personal life but also work. Don’t take this sign lightly. Reach out to your employees to help them manage work.
Alternatively, employees taking days off or coming in late at work may be doing so to avoid work-related stress to manage other stressors in their life. Reach out to these employees too to understand and help their scenario as best as possible.
Isolated and Unfriendly Attitude
Withdrawing from activities that don’t contribute to work directly is another clear sign of stressed-out employees. Stressed-out employees usually prefer being isolated. They can suddenly become shy and try to avoid any attention they can receive. They can also become less talkative and social and may even prevent company lunches or team-building activities.
While the above behavior is also a sign of employees looking to quit, they must be stressed out at your organization to seek employment opportunities elsewhere. You can look for further signs of irritation to confirm if they’re leaving or stressed out in such employees.
Stressed-out employees are more likely to be irritable than those who are just unfriendly. Constant fidgeting, nervous laughs, and worrisome expressions can be their giveaways. Reach out to these employees to help them lighten their work stress.
Managing employees is not only about getting enough work output from your employees. As an employer, you need to ensure the physical and mental health of your employees for both their and your organization’s betterment. You can take some time to get to know your employees better to avoid getting them all worked up.
