It is your employee’s first day at work, and they are probably excited about the opportunity. You can make this whole opportunity even better for them by prepping on the onboarding experience and ensuring that they settle in easily, without any friction whatsoever.
First impressions are almost always the last impression, which is why you would want your organization to have a positive first impression during the onboarding process. While your employee has impressed you, which is why you’ve hired them, it is now time for you to impress them with your onboarding process.
Prepare Their Desk and Have the Paperwork Sorted
A new employee would seriously dread turning up to work to see the messy desk of someone who used to work on it before them. The least you can do here is clean the desk and clear away the mess that the previous employee has left.
But, if you want to set the right impression, you have to jump ahead of the bare minimum. Have the desk cleaned, leave a welcome note and have a welcome gift ready for them on the desk. These things might sound minor right now, but they will end up making the day for your employee.
Arrange Team Lunch
New employees often find it awkward during their first lunch. They most definitely might not have their lunch with them, and will also find it awkward to order or communicate with the office staff inside the kitchen.
You can make things less awkward for them by organizing a team lunch or a buffet in the cafeteria. Make sure everyone is mingling well with each other, and that the new employees aren’t thrown under the bus.
Discuss Company Culture
This is one essential task that you shouldn’t skip on during the onboarding process. Take your time and explain all there is to know about the company culture to your employee. Your employees would want to know the company culture, and how things go around the office. If you have core values that employees should possess, then now is the time to communicate them across.
Make Communication Easy
Once the first day is gone by, you need to make sure that your employees open up and communicate. You wouldn’t want your employee to sit silently in the corner. In order to make them communicate, you should keep checking on them to see how they are doing. They will soon feel comfortable enough to come to you with reservations or feedback.
